A festive oration for Orthodox Sunday attributed to Michael Cerularius, Patriarch of Constantinople, contains an anathema against Gerontios of Lambi, who was active on Crete. Although he is mentioned among iconoclasts, any connection between him and those dissenting with the veneration of icons should be avoided. The sermon is a version of the Synodikon tes Orthodoxias (Synodicon of Orthodoxy), the composition of which dates to the early 11th century. In its present form, the Synodicon contains the anathema against Gerontios immediately after references to other unorthodox but not necessarily iconoclast teachings. Detailed study of the textual tradition is required if we are to determine when the reference to Gerontios was inserted into the Synodicon. |
