Title
New information on the study of the Byzantine walls in Chandax
Summary PDF
When certain sections of the Venetian walls were demolished during building work on the Apollo cinema, parts of the older Arab and Byzantine wall in Chandax came to light. This added to previous conceptions of how the town enceinte evolved, through the study of other similar archaeological finds and Venetian maps. The author traces the number of Byzantine towers and the distance between them, as well as their height and the system used in constructing their foundations and base, and looks at how the Venetians widened and reinforced the walls. The entire enceinte in the second Byzantine period is thus delineated, as regards form, layout and position around the old town.
