Due to its size, the article has been divided into two sections, on pages 92-130 and 163-203 of Vol. 6. This is the first publication and Greek translation of a French manuscript describing the events of the siege of Candia from 1667 to the fall of the city in 1669. The text is given unedited, retaining the original spelling and punctuation. It is probably an eyewitness account written by a French soldier who was familiar with fortifications, which he describes in detail. There is a brief summary of the contents, which focus on Turkish mining tactics, the Duc de Beaufort’s unsuccessful sortie, the capitulation of Candia and the withdrawal of the foreign troops. |
