Title
On the name of the district of Malvevizi
Summary PDF
The district of Malevizi took its name from the old Genoese or Venetian fortress named Malvesin or Malvicino located near the village of Keramoutsi. In mediaeval times, the term malveisin or malvesin was used to denote certain siege or war machines firing stone projectiles, which could inflict heavy damage from a short distance. The name given to the fortress must thus have referred to its usefulness in controlling nearby hotbeds of revolt. It played a decisive role in guarding over the environs of Chandax and the roads leading to the town.
