The Monastery of St. Catherine in Heraklion
Summary PDF
Among the series of classified documents issued by the Venetian Senate (Senato Secreta) and now held in the Venetian State Archive, the author of this study located a decision dated 12th January 1495 (Venetian year 1494), granting a building plot to monks in the Monastery of Saint Catherine of the Sinaites in Chandax. The decision permitted them to erect three premises in replacement of those previously owned in another area, which had been demolished due to planning modifications. Those buildings had in turn been erected on a plot granted by the state as compensation for three stone premises demolished during work on the fortifications in 1479. The document is published in the Italian original together with a Greek translation.
