Title
The church of the Eisodia and an older basilica in Fodele
Summary PDF
One kilometre north of Fodele is a church of the Eisodia tes Theotokou (Presentation of the Virgin), built on the ruins of an earlier basilica. The sections of wall still visible indicate that it belonged to a genuine type of Eastern domed basilica of the 11th or 12th century. Some of its sculptural elements are preserved in the newer church, while others have been moved to the churches of Aghios Georgios in Fodele and Aghios Panteleimon at the site known as Reres. The church of the Eisodia is of the bicolumnar cruciform type, with stone pillars instead of columns. Only traces of its original painted decoration remain. According to the dedicatory inscription, copied before it disappeared completely, the church was built at the expense of Michael Melissourgos and his family, twenty years after the 1303/1304 earthquake.
