A study of the geological formation of Crete, the composition of its subsoil strata and the earthquake activity noted in the area. The earthquakes which have struck the island from 2100 BC to 1930 AD are listed and described. In certain cases the sources from which the relevant information is drawn are published as they stand, e.g. the Latin letter of the Duke of Crete Hieronymus Donatus to Petro Contarini concerning the earthquake of 1508, some extracts of works by Byzantine and Western authors, post-Byzantine verses, folksongs, historical memorials from manuscripts and early printed works, etc. Information for the period from 1913 onwards is drawn from the catalogues of the Annales of the Athens Observatory. |
