Title
Cretan Palaeography. 6. Gortys and Michael Apostolis
Summary PDF
The Byzantine scholar Michael Apostolis chose Gortys as his home in Crete, as demonstrated by the title of his work Logos Parainetikos ek Gortyses eis Italian Romes (An admonitory oration from Gortys to Italy of Rome), as well as his letters to the priest Laonikos and the scribe Michael Lygizos. It was here, where he must also have transferred his library, that he engaged in his scribal activities. Some of his autograph manuscripts, housed in the Library of the Smyrna Evangelical School, were destroyed in 1922. An attack on him by Andronikos Kallistos is also preserved in codex Baroc. Graec. 165 in the Bodleian Library, Oxford.
