Codex Harvard University Riant 53 comprises Italian, Greek and Latin documents on the history of Crete during the period of Venetian rule. They refer mainly to the private affairs of Venetian subjects in Chandax, Rethymnon, Chania or other places outside Crete, and are dated 1523 to 1680. They may be divided into three categories: ecclesiastical documents regulating affairs in the jurisdiction of the Latin Archdiocese, naval documents and miscellaneous (expenditure notes, reminders of debt, etc.) The most interesting of these are accorded special mention. One document is published - the Greek will of Theodosios Korinthios, which must have brought the question of relations between the Orthodox population and the Catholic Church to the fore. |
