The following texts refer to the Ten Holy Martyrs of Gortys: an anonymous Aphegesis; the encomia by Andreas of Crete, the Presbyter of Constantinople Hesychius, Symeon Metaphrastes, Theodore and Gerasimos Palladas; the Menologia of Constantinople and that of Basil; the Synaxarist; the directions of Dionysios of Phournas on the iconographic rendition of the subject; a letter from the Bishops of Crete to Leo I; and an epigram by Michael Apostolis. As textual relations show, the elements which gradually slipped into the tradition of worship follow historical events, from the dawn of Christianity to the end of Venetian rule. The encomia of Gerasimos and Theodoros Palladas are imbued with a more modern, “Neohellenic” view, connected to the renewal of the iconographical tradition of the Saints. |
