A presentation of archaeological activity in Crete in 1949, specifically: preliminary work on the opening of the Heraklion Archaeological Museum and the redisplay of its exhibits; the condition of the archaeological collections of Chania, Rethymnon and Neapoli; provision for the conservation and protection of archaeological sites and individual monuments, including the Palace of Knossos, the chapels of the Eisodia tes Theotokou in Sklaverochori and Aghia Pelagia in Ano Viannos, both containing wall paintings, the Priuli Fountain in Heraklion and the medieval walls of Heraklion, Chania and Rethymnon; excavations at the sites of Minoan settlements and tombs, and the Early Christian basilica of Panormo; finally, chance discoveries and finds dating from the Minoan, Greco-Roman, Byzantine, Venetian and Turkish periods located across the island.
