Codex Oxon. Canon. Gr. 117 in the Bodleian Library was copied by Georgios Loubanos in 1649 in the besieged city of Chandax. Loubanos included in the codex a series of metrical and prose prayers, sometimes paraphrased from prayer books, together with synodic canons on fasting translated into demotic language with pronounced Cretan idiomatic elements. He entitled his compilation a Hymnologion. Presented here are the editions of two Prayers to the Panagia Theotokos and Despoina and the Prayer to His Soul, containing references to the Ottoman siege. The texts are mostly culled from ecclesiastical authors; they stand out, however, due to the personal style of the author and his lively language.
