This paper sets out the methodological foundations and research directions for the study of the Byzantine and post-Byzantine icons comprising the valuable collection of the church of San Giorgio dei Greci in Venice and the Greek community of that city. The author also raises problems of the aesthetic evaluation and ideological content of the works; issues concerning their relationship to Byzantine art and Western European painting; questions on the influences, training and development of the most important post-Byzantine painters; and issues of iconography, technique and style. The catalogue of the collection drawn up by Sandra Marconi, La Raccolta di Icone Veneto-Cretesi della Communità Greco-Ortodossa di Venezia (Venice 1948) is presented. Finally, the signed works noted in Marconi’s catalogue are indicated, together with additional information on each. |
