Summary PDF
Henri van Effenterre analyses the contacts between Crete and the Greek world from the time of Plato to the Roman conquest, drawing information from references by ancient Greek authors, inscriptions and archaeological finds. Among the most interesting subjects mentioned are the following: the interpretation of Plato’s views on Crete, the examination of the activities of the Cretan mercenaries and the investigation of Polybius’ harsh epithets. Further analysis is necessary concerning certain information drawn from Pindar, Plato and Aristotle, as well as dramatic works and epigrams from the Palatine Anthology. The presence of Cretans in Egypt and the development of democratic institutions on the island might also be examined, along with the conditions of economic life and the development of religion.
