The treaty signed by the representatives of the Venetian State and Alexios Kallergis in 1299 introduces the first measures for the peaceful coexistence of Venetians and Cretans, and favours the cooperation of the two parties: social class distinctions are regulated, former privileges of the Cretan nobility are ratified, intermarriage with Latins is allowed, economic dealings are agreed on and the ecclesiastical life of the Orthodox population is arranged. The Latin text of the treaty, translated into Modern Greek, is published based on certain copies in the Museo Civico Correr, Venice. The edition is accompanied by the lists of Cretans released from serfdom, and two records of the Venetian government of Crete concerning the lists of enfranchised Orthodox priests, their sons and deacons. |
