Title
The dating of the Minoan palace of Phaistos
Summary PDF
Based on the stratigraphical evidence and the pottery from the excavations of the palace of Phaistos, where successive layers of floors were discovered undisturbed, the author examines the architectural alterations to the buildings, the construction conditions of the new floors, the dating of the pottery and its stylistic development. The phases of the palaces are determined and it is noted that the succession of architectural and pottery styles at Phaistos and Knossos followed a parallel course, from the time of the Prepalatial settlements to the end of the Late Minoan period. This confirms the global character of Minoan culture, despite certain local particularities.
