Title
An important archaeological discovery: an Early Christian basilica in Panormo, Mylopotamos
Summary PDF
Presentation of the journal of the discovery of an Early Christian basilica at the location Aghia Sophia, southwest of Panormo, in the district of Mylopotamos in Rethymnon Prefecture. A first surface excavation revealed a T-shaped, three-aisled basilica, built of undressed stone. The sculptural and architectural features of the monument are dated to the 5th or early 6th century AD, a hypothesis supported by the basilica’s probable dedication to Hagia Sophia; this was a common name at the time of the construction of Hagia Sophia in Constantinople, in the context of the resurgence of Orthodoxy following the condemnation of Arianism.
