A first surface excavation revealed a T-shaped, three-aisled basilica, built of undressed stone. The sculptural and architectural features of the monument are dated to the 5th or early 6th century AD, a hypothesis supported by the basilica’s probable dedication to Hagia Sophia; this was a common name at the time of the construction of Hagia Sophia in Constantinople, in the context of the resurgence of Orthodoxy following the condemnation of Arianism. |
