Ancient Greek, Byzantine and post-Byzantine sources (texts and maps) are examined together with archaeological finds and ancient toponyms surviving to the time of the study, or at least to medieval and early modern times. The ancient cities of the area, from west to east, are the following: Amphimatrion, Amphimala or Amphimalion, Hydramia or Hydramon, Rithymna, Agrion or Arion, Panormos, Aulon, Astale, Pantomatrion and Dion.
