An examination of the life and work of Ioannis Kornaros, one of the most important Cretan painters during the period of Turkish rule, who also travelled to Mt Sinai and Cyprus. Oral traditions are evaluated together with biographical notes by earlier scholars and information derived from Kornaros’ signed works. Portable icons painted or restored by the artist are preserved at Toplou Monastery and the Sinaite metochi of Aghios Matthaios in Heraklion, at Sinai Monastery and other Greek Orthodox churches in Egypt, and also in Cyprus, where Kornaros also produced wall paintings and probably founded a school. Other works of his are housed in the museum of the Historical and Ethnological Society of Greece and the Byzantine Museum in Athens. |
