This report on the military condition of Crete, submitted to the Venetian government by a senior Venetian official in Crete, is published in the original Italian and in Greek translation. The report is attributed to Giovanni Batt(ist)a dal Monte, Captain General of Infantry, and is the result of an inspection made between 1585 and 1589. The report presents the fortification works completed during this period, the equipment, organisation and salary of the regular mercenary army of Venice on the island, the state of the cavalry and the military forces in the countryside, and the supplies of firearms and ammunition in the “Kingdom of Crete”. |
