The female figure depicted in the portrait “Lady in a Fur Wrap” by Domenicos Theotocopoulos, in the Stirling-Maxwell Collection in Glasgow, can be identified as Catalina Micaela, the elder daughter of Philip II of Spain. This identification, due to the impressive similarity of the woman to the “Infanta Catalina Micaela” by Spanish artist A. Sanchez Coello, is supported by historical arguments. The work is dated to the time of Theotocopoulos’ sojourn in the Spanish court, between 1579 and 1582, and forms part of a group of portraits which may be dated to the same period based on their style, artistic perception and certain external details. |
