Publication in Greek translation of certain documents concerning the regulation of the Cretan taxation system, the re-establishment of trade and diplomatic relations between the Ottoman Empire and Venice, and the taxes payable by foreigners living on the island, in the years immediately following the fall of Chandax. The documents are: a) an “interpretation of a customs charter regulation” of 1669; b) the appointment of a Venetian Consul to the island in 1671; c) the letter by which the Consul announces his arrival to the Pasha of Chandax and asks to take control of trade between Crete and Venice; d) the Pasha’s approval of the request; and e) the Sultan’s order for a tax levy on foreigners residing in Crete for commercial reasons. |
