Continuing the publication of sources of Cretan ecclesiastical history with documents of the period 1831-1835, the following texts are published with a critical commentary: the synodic letter by the Patriarch of Constantinople, Constantine I, exhorting Orthodox Greeks not to abandon Crete; synodic letters concerning the election of the new metropolitan Meletius Nikoletakis and the regulation of his income and rights; encyclicals on Meletius’ registration for the regular publication of newspapers by the palace and the weekly Greek edition of the palace newspaper; patriarchal letters on the settlement of debts by the bishops of Iera, Petra, Lambi and Kissamos; and a synodic letter forbidding the execution of religious ceremonies by priests who had come from Greece and advocating their removal from the island.
