The regulations issued by Giovanni Batt(ist)a dal Monte, Captain General of Infantry of Venice in Crete in 1588, is published in the original Italian and in Greek translation. The aim of the regulations was to impose order on the mercenary companies, mainly Italian in origin, distributed around the eight fortresses of the island. The various provisions cover issues of ethical conduct, daily life, training, equipment and maintenance of arms, and set out the duties and competencies of the soldiers according to rank. |
