This chronicle of archaeological activity on Crete from 1941 to 1947 focuses primarily on the archaeological finds located during the digging of trenches, shelters and other earthworks during the war and occupation, as well as in the course of illegal excavations carried out by the Germans and Italians, or in small-scale research digs by the archaeological service. The article further presents the activities undertaken by the archaeological service from 1945 onwards to protect and restore the archaeological sites and collections on Crete, as well as preparations for the re-opening of museums that had been closed throughout the war and occupation |
