As a Cretan doctor who pursued postgraduate studies in France, Michael Katapotis wrote a number of medical treatises, most of which concerned the fight against leprosy on Crete. He was actively involved both in political life and in the study of Cretan history, literature and folklore dating from the Venetian conquest to his own times. He made use of the historical material he amassed from oral tradition, monuments and inscriptions, monastery and community archives etc. in a series of studies, most of which were published in Myson, a periodical he began publishing in 1932.
