| A presentation of the Sphakian uprising against the Ottoman Empire in 1770 as recorded by Ottoman sources preserved in the Heraklion Turkish Archive: two imperial firmans, three reports by the secretary of the Ottoman expeditionary force at Sphakia to the pasha in Chandax, and a decree issued by the pasha. The documents are published in Greek translation by N. Stavrinides with a detailed commentary. On the basis of the said documents, doubt is cast on the accuracy of data given by other historical sources from the revolution, such as Barba Pantzelios’ song about Daskalogiannis and the documents used by Grigoris Papadopetrakis to write his History of Sphakia. |
