An examination of links between the Sacrifice of Abraham and Erotokritos and the texts they rested on (Luigi Grotto’s Isach and Paris et Vienne respectively), in support of the view that the Sacrifice of Abraham is later than Erotokritos. Composition of the Sacrifice is dated to 1635, according to the closing lines of the Venetian manuscript containing the work. Erotokritos must thus date to the early decades of the 17th century. With some reservations, support is lent to the theory that the Sacrifice was written by Kornaros. Lastly, doubt is cast on the possibility that the poet should be identified with an advocate named Vicenzos Kornaros or with a priest of the same name, both of whom lived at the time the works are placed. |
