Athens 1942, pp. 1-51 | | Summary PDF | | The Rema Threnetike by Ioannis Pikatoros of Rethymnon is one of the major works of medieval vernacular literature. It first appeared in W. Wagner’s outdated edition in 1942. That same year Emmanuel Kriaras published an improved version in the Academy of Athens Epeterida tou Mesaionikou Archeiou. This review considers Kriaras’ conclusions regarding the conditions in which the work was composed, highlighting both the improvements made to the text by the new editor and the quality of the commentary and glossary enriching the edition. Certain more appropriate readings of corrupted sections are pointed out, together with some unknown sources for the text. |
