Immediately after the Ottoman conquest of Crete, imperial decrees were issued providing for a census of all tax-paying Christians on the island and the organisation of the fiscal system that was to apply. Among others, two documents dating to 1671 were drawn up: the New Regulatory Ordinance relating to the fiscal system, and the census of male Christians in the Eastern division of Crete, living in the area from Mylopotamos to Sitia and liable to pay poll tax. Entered in the codices of the Hierodikeio (Special Court) at Heraklion, the Turkish documents are published in Greek translation with a brief introduction and notes. |
