In a memorandum to Louis XIV, King of France, dated 19th September 1669, Giovanni Morosini, Venetian ambassador in Paris, sought reinforcements to defend Chandax against the Ottomans. He had not yet learnt that the town had capitulated. An Italian translation of the original French memorandum surviving in the Florentine State Archive is here published with a parallel Greek translation and notes. The brief introduction preceding the publication looks at French policy in the final years of the siege of Chandax. This lay in secret attempts to bolster the Christian defence forces, though without disrupting the unimpeded conduct of French trade in the East. |
