| Focussing first on a review of research into Cretan theatre and the pinpointing of questions that should concern scholars, this paper moves on to the dating of the Cretan comedy Stathis. On the basis of internal textual evidence and the date of composition of other works written for the Cretan theatre, such as Gyparis – Panoria and Pandemos’ Amorosa Fede, Stathis is placed between 1620 and 1648, i.e. before the Ottoman siege of Heraklion (1648-1669), which period was favoured by Constantinos Sathas, the first publisher of the work. |
